URGENT HEALTH SECTOR SECURITY ANNOUCEMENT:

Eleven of our NHS customers have had outbreaks of ransomware today alone.

From the two screenshots we’ve received thus far it appears to be the same strain of ransomware. Please see attached this visual. We’re looking into the exact strain and will provide technical details shortly.

We’re working with those customers who have notified us.

Our immediate recommendations on the matter:

  • Be on guard for suspicious emails
    • Advise users:
      • Not to click on suspicious links
      • Do not open suspicious attachments
      • If in any doubt check with IT support
  • Update all OS
  • Update all Anti-Virus
  • Ensure backup is in place and operational
  • Use minimal user permissions where possible

Next step recommendations:

  • Installing an anti-ransomware endpoint solution ASAP. (Networks with anti-ransomware solutions installed have not been affected today.)
  • Consider implementing gateway solutions that utilise the latest sandboxing technology
  • Also look at running phishing simulation campaigns to your users to educate them.

If you have any questions, queries or have also been hit by ransomware today yourself please do not hesitate to contact us.

Please note if you are a Sophos Intercept X customer you are protected.
