Sophos vs Symantec, McAfee and Trend - Independent review ranks Sophos ahead of McAfee, Symantec and Trend Micro
Sophos endpoint security software trumps the competition in a recent independent product review by Cascadia Labs, scoring four out of five, and outperforming Symantec, McAfee, and Trend Micro. Sophos Endpoint Security and Data Protection 9.0 was also recognized as the only endpoint security software to provide integrated data loss prevention.

Sophos wins in three of six categories
Sophos outperformed Symantec, McAfee, and Trend Micro in the data protection, performance, and technical support categories. It matched Symantec, and beat McAfee and Trend Micro in installation and configuration as well as policies and management. And, it beat Trend Micro in visibility and threat awareness.
Peformance: "Sophos fastest overall"
Efficient endpoint security software performance is required to avoid impacting user productivity. Cascadia Labs timed each product on how long it took to scan files on-access, on-demand, and to open large PowerPoint files. Sophos was faster than Symantec, McAfee and Trend Micro, and excelled in low-memory situations. McAfee was much slower than the other products across the board.
Cascadia found that vendors choose to load their endpoint security software at different times of the boot process, making it difficult to measure comparable boot times. In fact, the test found that McAfee and Trend did not catch a test threat file during boot up as they load near the end in the startup process.

Technical support: "Sophos stood out"
The ability to receive help when you need it is critical to avoiding threats and "...can save your business time and money." Cascadia Labs made several calls to each company to evaluate their troubleshooting capabilities. Sophos outperformed the other vendors with much shorter hold time and being able to answer difficult questions without requiring an escalation.

Data protection: "Sophos capabilities are unsurpassed"

Cascadia rated the integrated device control and data loss prevention capabilities of each vendor. Sophos Endpoint Security and Data Protection was the only product to include data monitoring capabilities and device control. Symantec, McAfee, and Trend Micro each have standalone point products for data loss prevention that must be separately purchased, set up and maintained.
